Ombre Ruffle Cowl

We are excited to present this featured pattern by loom knit designer and blogger Nicole F. Cox from Thismomentisgood.blogspot.com

Soft, ultra-feminine cowl, featuring a light and lofty, slip-stitch design. Easy enough for a beginner!

LOOM:  18” All-n-One Loom,  or Premium Round Loom Set, 50 pegs used.

YARN:  1 skein, Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball, 58% Cotton, 39% Acrylic, 3% Other, worsted #4 weight, 5.3 oz/150g, 481 yds/440 m. Color:  #203, Mindful Mauve.

NOTIONS:  tapestry needle, Crochet hook, knitting tool/pick.

GAUGE:  20 sts and 26 rows = 4”/10.2 cm square in pattern stitch.

SIZE:  approx 5”/12.7 cm  wide x 34”/86.4 cm  around.

ABBREVIATIONS/KEY

U-k = u-knit (may use the regular knit st). Wrap your working yarn halfway around the peg than pull the bottom loop over the top wrap (working yarn).

Skip1 wyib = Skip one peg/st, with yarn in back. Skip this peg by taking your working yarn in back of the peg. You will not work this peg.

WS = wrong side  St(s) = Stitch(es)  CO = Cast-on  BO = Bind off

NOTES

  • The right side of the fabric (purl side) faces away from you as you work (typically the WS of fabric). This eliminates the need to lift stitches.
  • Cowl is knit as a flat panel, seamed, than gathered. The seam is needed to give the gather structure. Knitting in the round is not recommended.

INSTRUCTIONS

Foundation row:  Chain CO 50 pegs with 1 strand; work as flat panel.

Row 1:  *U-k1, skip1 wyib, rep from * to last 2 sts, u-k2.

Repeat row 1 until the entire skein is used, minus enough yarn to bind off and gather scarf, approximately 3 yds/2.7 m.

Bind off:  Use the chain one bind off method or one you prefer.

FINISH

Weave in ends. Fold the fabric in half, width wise, right side facing up and mattress seam. Leave a long tail for gathering. Using a tapestry needle, and loose running stitch, take the yarn in and out of the fabric along seam (while hiding it) and slowly gather the knitting. Cowl should measure 34“/86.4 cm after gathering. Make sure ruffles look even before continuing with the next step. Seam BO edge to CO edge. See schematic.
