YARN:   50 yds worsted weight 100% Cotton, Lily Sugar’N Cream in colors Sunshine (Main Color) and Sage (Contrast Color)

NOTIONS:  Loom tool, tapestry needle, pint size canning jar, battery operated LED tealight candle or other battery operated light source

GAUGE:  8 sts x 12 rows = 2″ in stockinette

WARNING:  Do not use a real candle with a flame in any yarn covered jar or use the finished project to cover a candle in a jar.

ABBREVIATIONS

K:  Knit

P:  Purl

YO:  Yarn Over – wrap the working around the peg

K2tog:  Knit 2 together

P4tog:  Purl 4 together

M1:  Make 1 – Lift strand between the stitches on the previous row on the empty peg then knit

M3:  Make 3 – (P, K, P) in the same stitch

M7:  Make 7 – (K, P, K, P, K, P, K) in the same stitch

Ch:  Chain – Knit the same stitch the number indicated creating a chain

CO:  Cast On

BO1:  Bind off 1 stitch using the Basic Bind Off method

MC:  Main Color – Yellow

PATTERN NOTES

Remove links on the decrease rounds.

Add links on the increase rounds.

Unwrap the YO on the next round before working the increases.

How-to short row: knit the peg, bring the working yarn from the back to the front of the peg, gently tug on the yarn and bring it to the adjacent peg to knit.

INSTRUCTIONS

Join 20 links and CO 40 pegs with MC.  Prepare to work in the round.

Tip:  Use the e-wrap cast on then tighten the cast on after finishing and use the long tail to finish the bottom.  Consult Video for detailed instructions on tightening the e-wrap cast on.

Rnds 1 – 2:  K all

Rnd 3:  *YO, P4tog, rep from * to end of rnd

Rnd 4:  *M3, P1, rep from * to end of rnd

Rnd 5:  K all

Rnd 6:  *P4tog, YO, rep from * to end of rnd

Rnd 7:  *P1, M3, rep from * to end of rnd

Rnd 8:  K all

Rnds 9 – 20:  Rep Rnds 3 – 8, 2 more times

Rnds 21 – 23:  Rep Rnds 3 – 5, once more

Rnd 24:   K all

Cut MC.  Add CC.

Rnd 25:  *K2, K2tog, rep from * to end of rnd –

Rnd 26:  *K5, K2tog, K6, K2tog, rep from * to end of rnd

Rnd 27 – 29:  K all

Rnd 30:  *K13, M1, rep from * to end of rnd

Rnd 31:  (Note:  Do not remove links for the empty pegs.  Leave them for the next round) *BO1, K3, rep from * to end of rnd

Rnd 32:  *YO, K3, rep from * to end of rnd

Rnd 33:  *M7, short row turn (see Pattern Notes), K6, short row turn, K4, short row turn, K2, short row turn, K3, short row turn, K5, Ch1BO 7 sts, move next st to the previous st and knit off then ch2, Ch10, K1, rep from * to end of rnd

Notes for Rnd 33:  The short rows are worked over the 7 stitches that worked in the YO on the previous row, then those 7 stitches are bound off creating the leaf.  Take the next stitch in front of the leaf to the previous stitch to join the bottom of the leaf.  Then chain 2 on the same stitch before working the chain 10 on the next stitch.

Ch2BO the remaining sts.

 

Cut tail and finish off by joining the last stitch to the first stitch to complete the chain.  See Video for instructions.

 

 

 

If desired for a more finished look, cut a new piece of CC yarn approximately 18″ long and sew the leaf behind the chain loop with a tapestry needle.  See Video for further instructions.

 

Weave in ends with a tapestry needle.

Place over pint canning jar and use extra MC yarn to secure the cast on edge over the bottom of the jar.
